September: 19th and 20th
Welcome Back ! A Book Arts Mosaic
Hand-crafted books from the Canadian Bookbinders Guild will be on display. Students will have a chance to view these beautiful and unique books as well as create one of their own.
October: 17th and 18th
Russian Explorers
We’ll talk about the importance of the Russian Explorers in the 1700’s and their influence in this area. A focus will be the 250th anniversary of Vitus Bering’s voyage 1741-1991.
November 14th and 15th
Crab Fishing in Cordova
We’ll take a look at how crab fishing was important to Cordova’s winter time economy in the first half of the 20th century. Students will get to create their own crab and if we’re lucky we’ll have a real crab to see!
January 23rd and 24th
The Iceworm Festival
We’ll be discussing the fun history of this mid-winter Cordova tradition, take a look at real iceworms and make our own version of Cordova’s mascot.
February 20th and 21st
Cordova Celebrates 100 years!
Please consider bringing your class to visit the annual Iceworm Photo Show. On exhibit in the meeting room! Celebrate the Centennial year of Cordova with us. We’ll highlight and talk about notable events in Cordova’s past 100 years and the students can design a city flag.
March 19th and
20th
Medical History of Cordova.
Who were the early doctors in Cordova? How was care provided to the railroad workers and the military personnel stationed in Cordova. Learn about our most colorful doctor – William Chase. Please consider bringing your class to visit “Rarified Light 2007” – a photo show produced by award winning artists from around Alaska. On exhibit from mid- February to the end of March.
April 23rd and 24th
The Windsor Hotel – THE place to stay in early Cordova!
Please consider bringing your class to the Annual Cordova Kid’s Art Show on exhibit in the library meeting room through the end of April. Even though it no longer graces the streets of Cordova, the Windsor Hotel was a beautiful landmark that played an important role in the community. See artifacts and photos of this old hotel.
